Frequently asked questions

Short answers about the portal, the app, your data and the tools. Each one reflects how the portal and the app work today, and — where data is concerned — the privacy policy.

Portal and calculator

What is pointMoA?

pointMoA is a ballistic calculator and shooter's logbook: an Android app and this portal. The portal runs a trajectory and click calculator in the browser, an interactive target and a printable zeroing target, ballistic tables per calibre, questions for the Polish shooting licence exam and a blog on ballistics and optics.

The portal and the app are developed by a single author. There is no company, shop or advertiser behind them.

Does the portal cost anything? Do I need an account?

No and no. Every tool on the portal is free and works without logging in. The portal keeps no user accounts, so there is nothing to create or delete.

Does the portal calculator compute the same as the app?

Yes. The portal uses a copy of the app's calculation engine — a point-mass model with G1 or G7 drag and RK4 integration — not its own implementation. For the same inputs both give the same result. The engine version is printed in the footer of every PDF.

Open the calculator

How accurate are the results?

The results are indicative. The engine computes from the data you enter and from a model that does not cover everything (at long range the transonic zone and gyroscopic drift come into play). The largest source of error is usually muzzle velocity: the catalogue figure comes from the manufacturer's test barrel, and your barrel gives a different one.

Verify every correction by shooting on the range before you treat it as a setting.

Does the calculator work without an internet connection?

Once the page has loaded — yes. The calculations, the targets, the PDF files and the target image are produced in your browser without sending anything to a server, so a dropped signal on the range does not stop them. The Android app works entirely offline.

Where does the ammunition and firearms database come from?

From manufacturers' data sheets and catalogues: bullet weight, muzzle velocity, ballistic coefficient and test barrel length, and for firearms — barrel length and twist rate. Every record carries its source address. A value the manufacturer does not publish is simply absent — the portal guesses nothing and derives nothing from another quantity.

The portal database currently holds 204 loads and 395 firearms; ballistic table pages exist for 21 calibres with complete data. The app has a larger database that is refreshed more often.

How do I share a calculator result?

Below the table there is a link field and a “Copy link” button. Whoever opens that address sees the calculator with your data and the table already computed. The interactive target downloads as a PNG image with a data strip — ready to paste on a forum.

The data travels in the part of the address after the # sign, which the browser never sends to the server, so sharing does not change the fact that the portal does not know your data.

The app

Where do I get the app and what does it cost?

The app is on Google Play, free and without ads. There are no in-app purchases today. The terms of service describe a planned Pro version in advance — when it arrives, the ballistic calculator stays free and unrestricted, and everything you have saved stays visible and exportable.

Is there an iPhone version?

Not yet — the store carries the Android version only (7.0 or newer). Work on an iOS version is under way; we give no date, so as not to promise one nobody knows.

Which languages do the app and the portal support?

The app: Polish, English, German, French and Czech. The portal: Polish and English; the blog articles exist in both.

What does the app do?

A trajectory calculator (table and chart), a zeroing assistant that counts clicks from a photo of the target, target analysis (extreme spread, mean radius, P50 and P90, hit-density map), a shooting logbook, an armoury with a round counter and maintenance history, report cards and printouts, and laser dry-fire training — the phone camera picks up the laser flashes on a printed target.

See the app page

Which laser do I need for dry-fire training?

A red one, 630–670 nm, up to 5 mW, pulsing on the firing-pin strike — for shooting and drills. A continuously lit laser is useful for hold exercises and preliminary zeroing. The app is not tied to any laser brand and sells no devices.

Firearm unloaded, live ammunition in another room, the laser never pointed at eyes.

Data and privacy

What data does the portal collect?

As little as possible. Whatever you enter in the calculator, on the targets and in the licence module stays in your browser's local storage and is not sent to a server — the portal has no back end that could receive it. Visits are counted by Vercel Web Analytics without cookies and without cross-site tracking; the hosting provider keeps server logs under its own rules.

The only cookie is a session record of the chosen language. The full list of records is in the cookie policy, and the scope and legal bases of processing are in the privacy policy.

Does the app send my data to a server?

No. The app works entirely on the device: there are no accounts, no login and no server anything could go to, and it contains no analytics, telemetry or ads. The only automatic route for data off the phone is the Android system backup tied to your Google account — a Google mechanism you can switch off in the system settings.

When the Pro purchase arrives, the only network request will be a check of the purchase status with Google Play — carrying no data from the logbook.

Privacy policy

How do I delete my data?

On the portal: delete the site data for pointmoa.eu in your browser settings — that is the only way, because only your browser has the data. In the app: Settings → Clear data, or uninstall. The Google backup is deleted separately, from your Google account.

Do a shared result link or a target image send my data anywhere?

No. The data in the link sits after the # sign, and the browser never sends that part of the address to the server — it reaches neither the logs nor the statistics. The target image is drawn on a canvas in the browser and goes straight to your disk.

Shooting licence

Are the questions on the portal the official PZSS exam questions?

No. They are 350 questions written on the portal on the basis of the Weapons and Ammunition Act and the PZSS rules, with the legal basis attached to every question about a provision. The material is for study and is not a source of law — what applies is the wording of the acts in force on the day of the exam.

Shooting licence module

Does the mock exam look like the real one?

No — and the page says so. The portal's mock exam has twenty random questions and allows at most one mistake; the real PZSS exam has ten questions, nine correct to pass, and the first four (the Act and safety) must be flawless. The mock exam checks knowledge; it does not simulate the pass rules.

The exam step by step

Is my study progress saved?

Yes, but only in your browser: the “I know this” marks and an unfinished exam sit in local storage, under the keys listed in the cookie policy. They do not transfer to another device and the portal cannot see them.

Targets and printouts

Why not print the zeroing target straight from the page?

Because the preview on the page scales to the window width, and the browser prints it at an arbitrary scale. The PDF is what you shoot at: it is 1:1, and the sheet carries control lines — measure them with a ruler after printing at 100 % before you put the target up on the range.

Zeroing target

What is the zeroing target for?

For zeroing at a distance other than the range you have: you zero for 100 m but the lane is 25 m. The target shows where the bullet should land on the shorter lane so that the zero holds at the intended distance. The point is computed by the same engine as the calculator, from your data.

Can I use the printouts at my club's range?

For your own use — yes, that is what they are for. The portal's content is protected by copyright; use beyond permitted personal use requires the author's written consent. If in doubt, write to us.
